Choosing the Right Paper Stock for Your Print Job

Paper Weight Matters

Paper weight (measured in GSM — grams per square metre) is the single biggest factor in how your printed piece feels in someone's hands. Here's a rough guide:

  • 100-120gsm — standard office paper, great for letters and inserts
  • 150-170gsm — a step up, good for flyers and brochures
  • 250-300gsm — card weight, ideal for postcards and presentation folders
  • 350gsm — premium card, the standard for business cards

Coated vs Uncoated

Coated stocks (gloss or satin/silk) have a smooth finish that makes colours pop. They're ideal for image-heavy designs like brochures and catalogues.

Uncoated stocks have a natural, tactile feel. They're easier to write on and work well for letterheads, forms, and anything that needs a premium, understated look.

Our Recommendation

For most business print — flyers, brochures, business cards — we recommend starting with a 170gsm satin for flyers and a 350gsm satin for cards. From there, we can suggest alternatives based on your budget and design.
